Bear with me folks, I’m going to take one of my rare dips into semi-topical stuff, so if you are reading this in a few days (the Internet equivalent of several decades) then it will seem horribly out of date. AOL - the one time giant of the ISP industry that somehow managed to shrivel to the point that I’m not sure what exactly it is that they do - has just announced that they will be purchasing the Huffington Post - a blog website so massive that one of the founders now voices a cartoon bear. The purchase bolsters an already substantial roster of information sources, and reveals an interesting capitalistic trend in modern news.
Recently, a fellow brainlazer and I were discussing a current scandal. I won’t say what the scandal is, for reasons that will soon be made clear, but suffice to say that it was a problem as frustrating as it was contentious. When my buddy complained that following the whole mess was driving him insane, I suggested he stop following it. At that point suggested that I was being an ostrich, but I had a different exotic creature in mind.
Politics. Right next to religion, political views are among the most painful things to discuss. They aren’t so much topics as pre-made arguments, like hot pockets full of anger and grief. As we enter adulthood we are expected to pick a side, so that when the time comes we’ll know what issues we’re supposed to support and which ones we’re supposed to shake our fists at. I hate everything about politics, from the way it splits us up as a nation to the fact I can never decide if “politics” is plural or singular. And thus, like all things I hate, I’m going to talk about it/them.
